In the wake of a new New York State initiative to enforce the collection of Camel cigarette taxes from Native American sellers, local smoke shop operators and their customers have been laboring to adjust to the new rules—primarily by turning to Native American-produced cigarette brands, which are still free from state sales tax.
Some shop owners are still getting by on existing supplies of untaxed major national brands of cigarettes, which they are selling for up to $4 per pack less than non-Indian sellers, while promoting Native American brands to their patrons.
