Smoking Cigarettes Extended Among Teens

Monday, March 5th, 2012

best karelia cigarette onlineThis is a national day of activism for youths worldwide to take a stand and speak out against big tobacco. If we can keep our youths from ever trying tobacco, there is a greater chance they will never become one of the 4,400 people who die each year in Colorado as a result of tobacco use. About 90 percent of adult tobacco users began before they were 18 years old. Tobacco use is a burden for everyone — not only for the individual’s health and related expenses, but also for the entire state, which pays $1.3 billion for smoking-related health costs each year.

Children and teens can be easily influenced by tobacco companies through movies, advertising, friends and other sources. Teens may not realize how addictive nicotine is and are often unaware of the serious health consequences they might face over time. Tobacco use leads to cancer, heart disease, emphysema, osteoporosis, infertility, hypertension and early wrinkling and skin changes.

Unfortunately, Pueblo’s youth rates for tobacco use are higher than the state’s rates: 19 percent of Pueblo youths smoke, compared to 11.9 percent for Colorado; 14.6 percent of Pueblo youths chew tobacco, compared to 7.4 percent for Colorado; and 26.6 percent of Pueblo youths smoke cigars, compared to 15 percent for Colorado.

Tobacco companies are constantly inventing new products in order to appeal to our youths and to gain new customers. Clear evidence of this is reflected in the new dissolvable tobacco products — sticks, strips and orbs. These products consist of finely ground tobacco along with highly addictive nicotine and are absorbed in the mouth. People can only speculate what other dangerous chemicals are in these products, since they are not currently regulated by the FDA.

These products, being test marketed in Colorado, can easily be hidden and used without parents or teachers knowing. They look like breath mints, strips and toothpicks, and the containers are cellphone-shaped. Young children and infants are at risk for overdose if they ingest them.

The Colorado State Board of Health, of which I am a member, passed a resolution asking R.J. Reynolds Co. to top selling cigarette products until the FDA had an opportunity to review them. Soon after, the Colorado Public Health Association and the Pueblo City-County Health Department’s Board of Health also passed similar resolutions. R.J. Reynolds immediately responded that they would not remove the products from Colorado. This sent a message from R.J. Reynolds inferring the state health board’s resolution is of no significance to them — and the health of Coloradans is not a concern.

According to the 2008 Healthy Kids Colorado Survey, three out of four high school students in Pueblo County who tried to purchase tobacco were successful.

Colorado does not require a license to sell tobacco. Requiring licenses of tobacco retailers would allow for local enforcement to educate retailers and watch for illegal sales to minors. The health department and the Pueblo Tobacco Education and Prevention Partnership’s coalition would like to eliminate illegal sales of tobacco to minors in our community and licensing can be effective.

Smoking Cigarettes Prohibited Outside Bars

Friday, February 24th, 2012

discount camel cigaretteHealth scientists have proposed to extend the smoking cigarettes ban to outside pub too for to stop the smoking use increase among social smokers. The recent study, published in the journal Tobacco Control, reported that smoking and drinking alcohol very often are linked together. And, while the smoking influence has declined, social smoking has raised among young people, researchers observed. Lead study, Professor Janet Hoek, of the University of Otago in New Zealand, noted: “Enforcing smoke-free outdoors bars could reduce smoking by removing signs that stimulate this bad behavior and change the places that relieve it.”

American Smokers and Nicotine Addiction

Friday, February 17th, 2012

discount virginia cigaretteAmerica’s health controllers continue to kill smokers. Cigarettes smoking is the gravest danger to America’s inhabitants health — it is considers worse than obesity. Forty-six million Americans still smoke tobacco, even if smoking warnings were placed everywhere and cigarettes taxes increased.

The main goal of the health regulators is to reduce smoking tobacco which harm populations’ health. As applied in other areas of public health, the benefits of harm smokers reduction are well known: the main goal is to reduce the health results of a substance or smoking behavior without demanding full abstinence from it. For example they distribute condoms to people who are known to engage in risky sexual activity.

Statistics show that approximately two-thirds of smokers wish to quit smoking and and one-third even try to quit yearly, fewer than five per cent. Nicotine addiction is very strong among Americans smokers and an abstinence doesn’t work. Anti-smoking controllers didn’t find yet an effective method which will help smokers to quit smoking. All methods which were imposed had no positive results.

Tobacco harm reduction advocates the use of reduced-risk nicotine products, which allows addicted smokers to curtail their smoking cigarettes without forcing them to eliminate nicotine altogether — a very difficult task. Nicotine is the main reason that attract smokers into smoking: the craving for nicotine is as strong as that for heroin or even cocaine. Yet the smoking-related disease among smokers is not caused by nicotine, but by the smoking products of tobacco burning inhaled many times a day for decades. So scientists found that nicotine is very addictive, but it is not harmful for smokers health.

That explains why tobacco harm reduction saves lives. Its main goal is to lessen the devastating health risks of cigarettes. The success of this policy in Sweden over the past four decades is widely accepted — but not among America’s tunnel-visioned health regulators. Thanks to smokeless tobacco products Swedish men have the lowest smoking rate and the lowest rate of smoking-related disease and death in Europe.

Public Smoking Limited

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

discount kent cigaretteNorth Myrtle Beach’s new public smoking limits are poised to go into effect March 7, and the efforts of health advocates should now turn to the other municipalities in our area. Myrtle Beach leaders have said multiple times in recent months that they have no desire to go down that path any time soon, but they’re hardly the only ones still sitting out the fight against the deadly habit.

We’re looking at you, Conway, Aynor, Loris, Georgetown, Andrews and Pawleys Island, not to mention Horry and Georgetown counties. You’re all overdue for action on this public safety issue.

Still not convinced that it’s necessary? Look at the research put together by Smoke Free Horry or the American Cancer Society or the U.S. surgeon general or many other anti-smoking groups. Secondhand smoke kills; it’s as simple as that.

Concerned that it will hurt business? Take a look at the many cities in the state that have already set limits and judge how they have prospered. Surfside Beach is doing just fine, as are Greenville, Charleston, Hilton Head, Columbia and many others.

Worried that it infringes upon individual liberties? We’re not asking that you take away a person’s right to smoke, only that you restrict that person’s right to blow that smoke into the lungs of surrounding individuals whether they want it or not. Like taking the car keys out of a drunk’s hand, it’s a matter of protecting the general public from a dangerous behavior.

Think that it should be handled statewide, rather than on the local level? We agree. Bring on the statewide public smoking ban. But in the meantime, we can’t ignore the safety of local citizens because the state has refused to act. Using this argument is too often simply a flimsy excuse for inaction. Myrtle Beach, for example, has its own local rule that declares leaking septic systems to be a public nuisance. It’s a good law that protects the citizens of the city. Should City Council have refused to enact it years ago and instead waited for the state to protect all of the citizens of the state from the hazard of leaking sewage? No, and neither should local municipalities sit on their hands and wait for the state to act on public smoking limits.

Smoking Ban Unfair

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

best quality karelia cigaretteGoing smoke free in Evansville means, starting April first, no lighting up in bars, restaurants or private clubs. Casino Aztar is exempt from the law but other businesses are worried they’ll lose customers.

Owner Terri Carl of Leroy’s Tavern says that when there’s a big game on, smokers and non-smokers alike, will be gathered around the TV’s in their bar. She says they try to work with everyone’s preferences.

“We have real high efficiency smoke eaters here, so we’re trying to accommodate the smoker and the non-smoker,” said Carl.

Now, that won’t be enough. Monday night, the Evansville City Council passed an ordinance that would make it illegal for all Evansville bars, restaurants, and private clubs to allow smoking.

Carl says she’s already set plans in motion to get her tavern ready.

“We can accommodate our smokers, by having outdoor patios, that’s what we have planned, in fact, I had a contractor here this morning,” Carl said.

But for private club, the River City Eagles, they say many of their patrons aren’t willing to compromise with the new ordinance.

“We’ve had a few members this morning already complaining they won’t be back again, they won’t join again,” said Trustee Rick Koewler.

Koewler says he feels the smoking ban is unfair to them because, unlike public bars and restaurants, they’re a private organization where members pay dues.

He says many of them view coming to the Eagles as an extension of their home and he doesn’t think it’s fair to keep them from lighting up. He says he seriously fears for the future of the club.

Owners also brought up to 14 News that Casino Aztar was exempt from this smoking ban, many of them called that unfair.

Welsh Government Banned Smoking in Cars

Friday, February 10th, 2012

tax free karelia cigarettesA campaign to stop people smoking tax free Karelia cigarettes in cars when children are travelling has been launched by the Welsh government. Fresh Start aims to protect youngsters from the effects of second-hand smoke in a confined space.

An outright ban will be considered depending on the success of the three-year campaign. But Simon Clark from the lobby group Forest said that a ban would be expensive, a step too far and totally unnecessary.

Launching the campaign, chief medical officer for Wales Dr Tony Jewell said children in cars were particularly at risk from second-hand smoke.

“Exposure to these chemicals puts children at risk from a range of conditions, including sudden infant death syndrome and asthma,” he said.

“There is robust evidence that the level of toxic chemicals is very high in cars, even with a window open. The Fresh Start Wales campaign aims to make people aware that smoking in cars is dangerous for their passengers, particularly children.”

Accusing parents of poisoning their children might seem like an extreme measure – but there seems to be a fair deal of sympathy for this campaign amongst smokers.

Even the lobby group Forest describes smoking in a car with a child as ‘inconsiderate’ – but it draws the line at any suggestion of a ban.

Any legislation would bring several sticking points – not least the question of how it could be enforced.

The BMA has called for a total ban on smoking in cars, regardless of the occupant’s age.

It argues older people are also at risk when inhaling second-hand smoke. But would the public be persuaded?

The Welsh government has settled on a wait and see approach in the hope that their campaign will prove to be an effective way of cutting smoking rates.

First Minister Carwyn Jones said smoking in cars “poisons” children and Wales would not shy away from further legislation.

“A ban on smoking in cars carrying children will be considered later in this five-year term of government if smoking levels do not reduce as a result of the campaign,” he said.

“We have commissioned research to measure levels of smoking in cars and public attitudes towards it, which will be revisited throughout the campaign to evaluate its success.”

But Mr Clark, of tobacco lobby group Forest, said: “I disagree that they’re poisoning children but I support the campaign.

“I think it’s important to encourage parents not to smoke in a car where small children are present out of consideration for the child if nothing else.”

Mr Clark wanted an assurance from the Welsh government that a ban would not be introduced.

“We think that would be a step too far and totally unnecessary,” he said.

“And I think it’s outrageous at the way they’re treating smokers considering there are 10m smokers throughout the United Kingdom who contribute a massive amount to tobacco taxation – over £10bn a year.

“It’s a perfectly legal product and I think it’s quite wrong the way smokers have been treated.”

Dr Iolo Doull, from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health officer for Wales, who has previously called for a total ban in cars, backed the campaign.

“Infants and children exposed to tobacco smoke are more likely to have chest infections, to have ear infections, to be admitted to hospital with wheezing or asthma, and to die of cot death,” he said.

Chris Mulholland, head of the British Lung Foundation Wales, said it was vital that the option of a ban remained.

“Poll after poll shows a huge majority of the public would support a ban,” she said. “Evidence from other countries shows that legislation has made a big difference in protecting children.”

Cigarettes Smoke More Harmful in Closed Places

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

cheapest winston cigarettesSmoking in public places is becoming frowned upon more and more and now, the Centers for Disease Control is saying don’t do it in your home or even in your car!

“Literally, tobacco affects the entire body from the minute it hits your body, either through your mouth or through your nose,” said Harrington Cancer Center Clinical Educator, Sharri Miller. “It hits the lungs, it goes to the brain seven seconds.”

Miller told Pronews 7, the worst way to inhale it isn’t even from smoking a cigarette yourself. It’s just simply being around it: secondhand smoke. The CDC said the effects of secondhand smoke are even worse in confined areas like your home or car, and are particularly bad on kids.

“You’ve got ear infections, you have sinus infections. Anything from here,” Miller said covering her face, “the minute you breathe it in, it’s all reacting in an allergic way. And we’re all allergic to it, even if you also smoke but children are more sensitive to it,” she added. “Even if you’re in the car and someone’s smoking and they have the window down, it still can pose danger on you. There is no risk free secondhand smoke.”

In the report, the CDC encourages families to stop smoking around children in their homes or cars. There are no actual restrictions against it for most families but for some, like foster families, it’s actually illegal.

“Foster parents cannot smoke in the house,” explained Department of Family and Protective Services Foster Adoption Program Director, Sandra White. “Now if a foster parents does smoke, they can smoke outside but not around the children and if they transport the children they’re not allowed to smoke while they’re transporting the children.”

White said the agency has operated under these minimum standards for years, and the revised guidelines prohibiting foster parents from smoking around foster children were adopted in 2007. Even then, information continued to pile up about the increased dangers of secondhand smoke.

The recent CDC report talked about increased risk for infants to suffer from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS. Children exposed to even small amounts of secondhand smoke are at risk for developing asthma, allergies and ear infections.

“How fair is it to place them in a home where there’s someone smoking in there that might add more to their medical problems?”, questioned White.

Overall, the number of teens exposed to secondhand smoke in cars has gone down in recent years but the CDC said there needs to be more restrictions to help prevent it. Until then, we just have to hope the medical risks are enough reason to quit.

“I hope that the individual will recognize that and not impose that in their child or realize that it’s no good for them either,” said Miller.
